Most Portuguese apartments have washing machines but rarely tumble dryers. In the humid winter, clothes can take days to dry on racks, often developing a musty smell.

Self-service laundromats (Lavandarias Self-Service) are very popular for their large industrial dryers. A 15-minute drying cycle costs around €2-€3 and is the most efficient way to handle bedsheets and towels during the rainy season.
