Dealing with Mold & Cold

Portuguese houses are notoriously cold in winter due to poor insulation and lack of central heating. High humidity often leads to mold (bolor) on walls and clothes. This is a shock for many expats coming from colder but better-insulated countries.

A high-quality dehumidifier (desumidificador) is an essential investment, not a luxury. Electric oil heaters are the most common heating solution, but be careful with electricity bills. Ventilate your house daily, even in winter.
