Terminating a Rental Contract

Tenants can usually terminate a rental contract after serving one-third of the lease duration. You must provide written notice via registered mail. The notice period depends on the contract length (usually 120 days for contracts over a year).

If you leave early without proper notice, the landlord can legally demand rent for the missing notice period. Always keep the receipt of the registered letter (Carta Registada) as proof of your notification.
