Santos Populares Festivals
June is the month of "Santos Populares". Lisbon celebrates St. Anthony (June 12-13) with parades on Avenida da Liberdade and street parties in Alfama. Porto celebrates St. John (June 23-24) by hitting people with plastic hammers.
The air smells of grilled sardines and basil (manjerico). These are the biggest parties of the year, often lasting until sunrise. If you live in a historic district, expect noise and crowds during this month.
