Meal Allowance (Subsídio de Alimentação)

In addition to salary, most Portuguese companies pay a daily Meal Allowance. If paid in cash, it is tax-free up to €6.00 per day. If paid onto a "Meal Card" (Cartão Refeição), the tax-free limit increases to €9.60 per day.

This card can be used at supermarkets and restaurants. It is a smart way to increase your net income, so always ask potential employers if they offer the allowance via card to maximize the benefit.
