Wildfire Prevention & Safety

Portugal is prone to wildfires in summer. If you own land or a house in a rural area, you are legally required to clean the vegetation within 50 meters of your property by April 30th each year. Fines for non-compliance are heavy.

During the "Critical Fire Period" (usually June to September), lighting bonfires, burning garden waste, or using fireworks is strictly prohibited. In case of fire, dial 112 immediately.
