Are Public Hospitals Free?

Since 2022, most "Taxas Moderadoras" (User Fees) in the public health system (SNS) have been abolished. Consultations at health centers and most hospital treatments are now free for residents.

However, fees still apply if you go to the hospital emergency room without a referral from SNS 24 or your family doctor (unless you are admitted). Always call 808 24 24 24 before rushing to the ER to avoid these costs.
